Precisely one year ago, news about the Capitol riots in Washington, D.C. went viral around the globe. Among videos and images of thousands of Trump followers, conspiracy disciples, right-wing militias and Alt-Right activists, large numbers of people in flamboyant costumes dominated the media, most of all Jake Angeli, a.k.a. the “Q-Shaman,” armed with a horned fur headdress and a US flag tied to a spear. Frank Usbeck already addressed this mishmash of cultural and historical references in a SKD blog contribution back in the day – we’re republishing his blog post today.

What we protect, why and how we do it differs according to perspective, place and time. The GRASSI Museum of Ethnography in Leipzig is currently dedicating a special room to the topic of protection. In our digital reader, we have brought together four authors who write about protection from very different perspectives.

Epidemics have presented mankind with challenges at all times, but have also triggered social change and medical progress. Coins and medals serve to shed light on the epidemics of the past and present in terms of how they were perceived by their contemporaries, their fears and hopes.
Counterpoints (2022/23)

In 2022 and 2023, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden are fixing their gaze once again on GDR times in their research and exhibition project “Kontrapunkte” (“counterpoints”). Based on their own holdings and the history of their collection, fresh perspectives are being developed on art in the GDR, how it was seen and the significance allotted to it in the past and present, with the addition of international viewpoints.
Villa Massimo at the Japanisches Palais (2022)

Every year, the German Academy in Rome Villa Massimo awards the Rome Prize to nine selected artists, enabling them to spend ten months in Rome. The artist's works from the last two years are on display this year in the exhibition "Eppur Si Muove - Und sie bewegt sich doch" ("And yet She Moves") at the Japanisches Palais.
Spoon Archaeology (2022)

With the EU ban on plastic cutlery in 2021, the plastic spoon has become an object of the past. The designers Peter Eckart and Kai Linke have taken this as an opportunity to present their collections of these recently archaeological objects in an exhibition at the Kunstgewerbemuseum.
